My Story
As I transitioned into the working world from college, I quickly discovered that my leadership roles weren’t just handed to me as they had been in college organizations.
Another discovery, and this all took some time, was that I lacked the confidence to step up and choose to be a leader. I was caught in the trap of thinking I had to be asked to take on a project. When I saw situations where leadership was needed, I tended to back away, thinking that other people were more experienced, better equipped, had better skills or whatever!
One of my father’s friends suggested that I enroll in a Dale Carnegie Leadership course to help me learn some skills. He didn’t say this, but now I know this to be true: Learning skills builds confidence, and skills is what I needed to learn.
In a matter of a few months as I practiced my new skills, my confidence did grow.
As a personnel manager I interviewed potential hires for my company. We were experiencing a shortage of proficient word processing typists, so I asked my manager if I could teach a Saturday class on how to use a word processor. In a matter of a few weeks we had the typists that we needed.
The added bonus was that these typists were inspired to continue learning more about word processing and over the course of a few years moved up in our organization based on their habit of being curious and taking on challenges.
A few Saturdays of training helped others see me as a leader, but more importantly, it helped me feel confident taking those first steps.
Today I know those classes in leadership made a difference for all my life.
