Managing Oneself by Peter Drucker

As much as people say, “That person is a born leader,” the fact remains that we can learn to become a leader.

I’d like to invite you to join a six-week complimentary email course, Managing Oneself, to learn how to be a better leader.

Too often the terms leadership and management are used interchangeably.

Leadership is about doing the right things. Management is about doing things right.

Leadership is about dealing with change. Management is about changing the deal.

Leadership chooses where we are going. Management plans when and how we will arrive.

When we lead without adequate management skills, logistical problems arise. If we manage without providing clear leadership, we may travel a long road to nowhere.

Leadership focuses on developing people, empowerment, doing the right things, direction and principles.

Management, on the other hand, concerns itself with taking care of things, control, doing things right, speed and practices.

To effectively move and grow as human beings, and to grow our organizations, we need both leadership skills and management skills.

Where do we begin?

By learning to manage and lead oneself, the person in the mirror.

There are many definitions of leadership.

Stephen Covey says, “Leadership is communicating to people their worth and potential so clearly that they come to see it in themselves.”

Peter Drucker said, “The only definition of a leader is someone who has followers.”

John Maxwell says, “Leadership is influence—nothing more, nothing less.”

It all begins by leading yourself, seeing your own worth and potential, following your own directives, and influencing your behavior.

To be effective leaders we must know how to effectively lead and manage.

Without leadership, we manage the wrong things.

Without management we never move our vision ahead.

Without effective leadership it is like Yogi Berra said, “We are lost, but we are making great time.”

Our Managing Oneself leadership training begins by looking at managing yourself.

How can we lead and manage others effectively if we aren’t doing so ourselves?

Over the next six weeks you’ll be guided through the well-known book, Managing Oneself by Peter Drucker.

Drucker’s book is compacted wisdom in about sixteen pages.

Once a week you’ll receive a short lesson, questions for self-reflection, and a simple reading assignment.

I do hope you’ll join me for this essential course to help you become a better manager and leader, whatever your role may be.
